Krippendorf's Tribe
James Krippendorf, a melancholy anthropologist who was just widowed, must create hard evidence of the existence of a previously undiscovered New Guinea tribe in order to redeem himself after squandering his grant money. Using grass skirts, staged ceremonies, and theatrical makeup, he transforms his three difficult children into members of the Shelmikedmu, a prehistoric civilization whose customs fascinate academics. But when a sour competitor threatens to expose Krippendorf's hoax, he joins in on the deception himself to protect himself from the embarrassment.
