The United States of Hoodoo
The film examines how African spirituality has influenced popular culture in the United States. Upon reaching the coasts of North America, the ancient African deities underwent transformations. Now, their spirit is manifested in turntable mastery, improvisational talents and mind-blowing collages, performances, and rituals. Traditional and conventional views of race, religion, and rationality are challenged by the film. To get a sense of the richness and energy of the Mississippi Delta's diverse culture, the film talks to musicians, poets, painters, healers, gumbo cooks, and blues performers in their own words.
