The Honorary Consul

The story is set in a small politically unstable Latin American country and follows Dr. Eduardo Plarr, who is half English and half Latino and left his home to find a better life. Along the way, he meets a variety of people, including British Consul Charley Fortnum, a representative in Latin America who is attempting to prevent a revolution. He is also a remorseful alcoholic. Another person the doctor meets is Clara, with whom he falls in love right away, but there's a catch: Clara is Charley's wife.
