Remember the Sultana
Over 2000 Union soldiers, passengers and also team were crammed aboard the boat Sultana, licensed to carry 376. Graft, greed, congestion, a badly maintained watercraft, and the Mississippi River was inflamed with springtime snowmelt conspired with each other to produce a disaster. On April 27, 1865, the boat's boilers took off, triggering the most awful maritime catastrophe in United States history.
