King of the Children

An unschooled boy, among the many targets of Mao's Cultural Transformation, is labouring in the countryside when he is unexpectedly appointed to teach in a near-by town school. Progressively, he locates the confidence to ditch the Maoist textbook and encourage the hardly literate children to write about their own lives as well as feelings. At the same time, with a series of dream-like meetings with a young cowherd, he begins to pick up the opportunities of a life past the specifications of conventional education and learning.
