On 3 April 2004, throughout the vacation of Ashurarebels loyal to Shiite leader Muktada As-Sadr, launched an insurgency in the zone. The Poles, together with authorities and soldiers, were given the task of protecting City Hall. The clash developed in to the biggest Polish engagement as World War II. Perhaps not a single allied soldier expired, but about 80 insurgents were murdered in a counter-attack.
