The members of "Jane" risked their personal and professional lives to support women with undesired pregnancies, defying the state legislature's ban on abortion, the Catholic Church's condemnation of it, and the Chicago Mob's profiteering from it. The Janes offered low-cost and free abortions to an estimated 11,000 women in the pre-Roe v. Wade era, when abortion was illegal in most states and even disseminating abortion information was illegal in Illinois.
