The Heartbreak Kid
There are no surprises in Christina's (Claudia Karvan) life; she's a school teacher from an affluent Greek-Australian family who's engaged to a lawyer and happy with that. When she starts working in a working-class inner-city school, the pupils challenge her beliefs. With the help of non-English speaking students at her school, Christina gets involved in a push to build an all-white soccer team, despite the prejudiced PE teacher's preference for Australian Rules Football (Alex Dimitriades). Christina is forced to confront herself, her family, and the culture she lives in as a result of the ensuing affair. Coupling comedy with deep examinations of contemporary ethnic relationships in Australia with a young cast and insightful writing.
