The Battle of the River Plate
The Royal Navy fought a desperate battle to keep the Atlantic convoy routes open and the British Isles supplied during the early years of World War II. The several surface/commerce raiders that had snuck out of German waters just before the declaration of war posed a serious threat. They were primarily used to target and sink commercial ships, and they could and did strike anywhere. They were supplied by axis cargo ships or tankers. This is the story of one of these ships, the 'Admiral Graf Spee,' and how three lightly equipped Royal Navy cruisers with only 6 and 8 inch guns bravely went on this fearsome 'pocket battleship' with 11 inch cannons.
