Portrait of Kaye
Kaye has lived much of her life in her parents' home due to her lifelong agoraphobia, which has kept her confined. She pastes photographs of deceased members of her family next to the faces and lives of old film stars on the walls of her home in an effort to overcome her concerns. The result is a kaleidoscopic collage that combines her family's history with Hollywood fantasy. Portrait of Kaye is a sad account of a lady creating her own distinct identity while negotiating the competing effects of her mother's bawdy humor and her father's concerns. It is told first-person via free-flowing monologues. Her obsession with a younger neighbor provides 74-year-old and recently widowed her the chance to pursue previously suppressed sexual and personal liberties. Ben Reed, a former next-door neighbor and music video director, has put together a special and moving reflection on family, film, and what it means to be free.
