North Korea: A Day in the Life
It's no coincidence that the cityscapes and patriotic choruses of this film appear to be a vast cry from the gloomy scene of Seoul Train. With the complete consent and assistance of the North Korean government, Dutch filmmaker Pieter Fleury developed this propaganda video that depicts a day in the life of one of the world's most fascinating cultures. A Day in the Life, entirely prescribed by the North Korean film bureau, follows a regular North Korean family through their everyday tasks, largely dedicated to comrade pride and General Kim Jong Il's glory. The film celebrates North Korea's success. But does it work? With no commentary and only straight footage, viewers may interpret Fleury's film in a somewhat different way than intended.
